Health and Social Care

Health and Social Care GCSE is designed for students who have an interest in health or social issues or those who would like a career in a caring profession.   It is a course which is ideal for students who are not sure what they want ‘to be’ when they are older because it covers topics relevant to life experiences.

This qualification is a double award - on completion successful candidates are awarded two GCSE grades.   Currently the course is offered as a 2 year course for Years 10 and 11 and since 2008 it has been available as a 3 year course for Year 9s.   Current students study three different modules based on Health, Social and Early Years; Promoting Health and Wellbeing and Understanding Personal Development and Relationships.   Students write two pieces of coursework (each about 3-4000 words long) and sit one GCSE examination.

We follow the Edexcel syllabus.

In 2010 the Diploma in Society Health and Development was introduced at PCS; this will open more doors for students with an interest in health, society and factors that impact on individuals’ lives.

Students studying this course have undertaken visits and activities.  They have investigated care providers and observed how professionals do their jobs and professionals have come into school to talk about their roles.
