ICT

ICT at Portchester Community School

The study of ICT provides an insight into the significance and relevance of computers, applications and communications in the work environment and everyday life. ICT is used in areas as diverse as manufacturing, education and medicine and ICT skills are valued in virtually all areas of business and society.

At Key Stage Three, students have one hour per week teaching time, where they are given the opportunity to use ICT in a variety of ways. This includes: research; presentation; group work; web design; communication; data handling; modelling; measurement and control, and creation of multimedia products.

Students in Key Stage 4 have the opportunity to gain a number of separate qualifications.  Core ICT follows the AiDA (Award in Digital Applications) course which is equivalent to a full GCSE at A* to C at Level 2.  This course enables students to develop and demonstrate a range of skills in building up an "eportfolio" of evidence.  Students on Diploma courses are required to pass ICT Functional Skills at Level 2 (also equivalent to a GCSE at A* to C.)  Other students may be offered this qualification as an addition or an alternative to the AiDA course.

ICT is also available as a three-year option to Year 9 students where the CiDA (Certificate in Digital Applications) course will be undertaken.  This course is the equivalent of two GCSEs at A* to C.
