The Mathematics Department is committed to raising the Numeracy standards of all students so that they develop familiarity and understanding of mathematical concepts, methods and vocabulary in all areas of the curriculum. We aim to equipstudents with the ability to think independently, to solve problems, to reason and to assess risk.
Studentsare placed in ability groups from Year 7, which allows for the most able to work at a fast pace, and to be encouraged to think independently, and those who need more support to work in smaller groups with help from Learning Support Assistants.
National Curriculum tests are taken by most students at the end of Year 8, and Key Stage 4 Courses start in Year 9.
GCSE Statistics is offered as an extra qualification to the most able students.
Students follow a Scheme of Work based on the National Curriculum in Key Stage 3 comprising
· Mathematical processes and applications
· Number
· Algebra
· Geometry and Measures
In Key Stage 4, students build on the knowledge and skills learnt in Key Stage 3, and develop their ability to think for themselves. The GCSE Mathematics examination is taken at Higher or Foundation level. Grade C is achievable at both tiers of entry.
